Why is Disney’s Lone Ranger bombing at the box office?

It’s definitely a bomb.

On paper and in the marketing blitz that preceded its leaden debut Wednesday, The Lone Ranger had the trappings of a runaway hit.

By the end of Wednesday, the $225 million film was off the rails. The Johnny Depp vehicle earned an abysmal $29 million through July Fourth and finished the usually lucrative holiday weekend with $49 million.

The Lone Ranger is sucking hind teat for the same reason most of Hollywood is circling the drain: It is leftist propaganda.

And the story… I haven’t seen this film, but reviewers consistently tell the tale of a Tonto-centric film with a deluded idiot Lone Ranger who is idealistic and ignorant, with a wise, omni-competent Tonto. The entire story is about Tonto “setting the record straight” in 1933 talking to kids about the real old west. The US military is evil and corrupt and incompetent, so horrible you cheer for the Indians who come to the real rescue. The white man is consistently awful and wicked. Cowboys were monsters, settlers were awful, on and on it goes.

From what I’ve read, its like Howard Zinn wrote the screenplay. I guess the people behind the film thought it would be all clever and ironic to turn the Lone Ranger on its head – after all it worked so well for Green Hornet… oh yeah – and maybe they figured a movie that kicks America in the pills for two hours in its most beloved historical era would do well overseas.

Maybe if Hollywood directors and producers would stop making movies to impress each other and start making movies for Americans they would stop losing their asses.

Aww shucks. I no longer support the wages of that fine group known as the hollyweird crowd.
Get out of politics in entertainment or go broke.

  2. notamobster says:

I enjoy Johnny Depp. I think it’ll be a decent flick for sheer entertainment value. Or very own ‘the bronze’ said it was a good flick. He has good taste in movies. I’ll rent it when it comes out on DVD.

A decent flick for sheer entertainment value to rent, or running to the movies to spend 60 or so bux is a big diff. Nota.
I am a noted B rated movie watcher. I will just not support running to the movies because there is a nice commercial on the toob and some snob telling me it’s going to be the “next summer BLOCKBUSTER!!!”. Sorry, that hype don’t get to me.
Remember how much hype Star Wars got in 77? NONE, ZIP, ZERO. I think it was 1 or 2 weeks of 15 second flashes.

Well, I cheered for the cavalry in Dances with Wolves.

Sorry man, I was young, I was lookin at the hot chick…. hehehe……
I was in Hawaii for the waterworld fiasco, that was a “Summer BLOCKBUSTER!!” also….. bleh…..

  3. notamobster says:

Johnny Depp is also a second amendment supporter.

  4. Bman says:

There may be another reason as well to the one given, why this movie is bombing. In my opinion, I believe that people just don’t care for the type of mask worn in this movie. Evidence to back this up, through my careful research, can be found below-

The Mask of Zorro (1998)- Total Domestic Gross: $94,095,106
    Total Budget: $98,000,000

Green Lantern (2011)- Total Domestic Gross: $116,601,172
    Total Budget: $275,000,000

The Green Hornet (2001)- Total Domestic Gross: $98,780,042
    Total Budget: $165,000,000

I truly don’t think people like movies where the main character wears an eye mask. I’ve never seen any of the above mentioned films. Why? Because I don’t like characters with eye masks. I believe my work is done here:)

    • Marlene Morgenthaler says:

Batman wears a mask, and Robin has an eye mask.

      • Bman says:

Batman’s mask isn’t a true eye mask. He has a eye mask attached to a head cover with ears. People dig those kind of masks. Did Robin make a movie?

        • notamobster says:

Oh. Ouch. Bman with the smackdown. I like your working theory and think it may have merit.

You ever hear the story about Two Dogs Farking? πŸ™‚

  7. Buzzdaddy says:

The Buzz family went to see it on July 4th. We laughed and were thoroughly entertained. I’m not at all worried about my kids picking up any message about the “evil white race” or any other message. At all. It was just a good, fun movie; a brief escape from real life. It had everything all the old Saturday matinees had: good guys, bad guys, Indians, Chinamen, soldiers, railroaders, “soiled doves”, townsfolk, etc. It even had a train chase! I think if you go in looking for a message of any kind, you’ll be disappointed. It was just fun.

  8. James says:

It’s hypocritical that a politically correct movie against whites would choose Depp for Tonto than a real Indian. Hollywood doesn’t practice affirmative action.

  9. notamobster says:

I have a liberal acquaintance who actually complained about that some months back. She was calling for a boycott. What a sad existence.

  10. Jim22 says:

It’s about time for an executive order prohibiting a movie from bombing. Because of the term ‘bomb’ maybe DHS could get involved.

Hmm.squaw not happy. Make meatloaf.Give to armadillo. Armadillo sick and die.
    Squaw make meatloaf from armadillo.

  13. Tatersalad says:

Johnny Depp has been seen wearing a Che Guevara T-Shirt in the past and people have not forgot this!

  14. messup says:

Let Hollywood “suits” make losers! It’ll defund the Michael Moore’s and Spike Lees of this Progressive New Left Activist lunacy! Let these Hollywood types be “bundled” into funding Progressive new Left Activist’s causes designed to force Americans into accepting “the collective” Marxist mentality, it’ll serve the purpose of finally waking-up Americans to the “empty promises” heralded by shrieking Saul Alinskites! Finally, when the “pot” is empty, precisely because of this “emptiness,” all Americans will rise to accept their God given rights and individual exceptionalism as contained in Americas US Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. Pray. Amen. Join a Tea Party. May take some time, but patience, takes a bit of time to accept one was on the wrong path.

  15. xenicalman says:

    Doesn’t Depp live in France?
    Nuff said.
