Ahhhh… Finally I get back to my roots. American International Pictures. If you’ve been reading here a while, you know that my Mother once worked at the downtown Jacksonville, Florida distribution office for American International Pictures. Now here we are with an AIP classic.
This one makes me all warm inside. It’s a Cold War Science Fiction Disaster Movie. It’s AWESOME! I’ve only seen a little of it and I can say that even though it’s pretty fancy pants, having Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Brian Keith, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden and Martin Landau in it… it’s still an American International Picture. You will enjoy the vintage everything about this movie.
Essentially, a newly observed Comet strikes a large Asteroid, sending a big chunk of metallic rock toward planet Earth. If the United States and the Soviet Union can agree to use its most strategic weaponry together, they have a chance to defeat the threat. The survival of the human race hangs in the balance. It’s kind of tough watching the Dad from Family Affair play the role of a Godless Communist. Nonetheless, based on the little I’ve seen so far, I can deal with it.
There are some instances of uncanny prophetic destruction in this movie, things that most of us saw destroyed in our lives, only years after this movie hit the theaters. American International Pictures was way ahead of its time. Their genius goes largely unrecognized but for a few of us who know.
