How Many Of You Know About The American Fighter Pilots Who Saved Israel?

Above and Beyond: The Birth of the Israeli Air Force

Below is a trailer for the coming movie about American WWII fighter pilots who volunteered to fly for the new state of Israel in 1948. They were called the ‘Machal’ forces.

They cobbled together an air force using aircraft that were abandoned after WWII – largely by the Germans.

The trailer below is nearly eight minutes long but well worth watching.

The Machal forces were the Diaspora’s most important contribution to the survival of the State of Israel.”
– David Ben-Gurion”

As Peter says, “It was the birth of the Israeli Air Force”.

Amazing what they hid from us before the internet isn’t it. I love learning new history. I have a friend in his 80’s that was on one of the first Naval ships in Guam after the liberation. Amazing some of his memories.

The pop up box harassing Firefox users aside… Great film.

The courage and total commitment of those first Jewish settlers was way more than an act of faith. It was FAITH writ large.

Looks like a great movie, where freedom (not exclusive to the U.S. was again the underdog but wins out in the end and against all odds.
