The Climategate smoking gun
December 4, 2009The smoking gun in Climategate isn’t in the emails, it is in the code. The details are over at Watt’s Up With That. Take a look. In the mean time here is the overly simplified version: the data that went into the model was irrelevant. The model produced the hockey stick graph no matter what data was fed into it. You could enter the runs per inning for the first game of the World Series for the last 100 years: hockey stick. Your check book balance since January: hockey stick. Mad Brad’s per day use of the word “communist”: hockey stick. The budget deficit since Obama took office… well… that really is a hockey stick but you get the idea.
Where do we go from here?
It’s not as cut-and-try as one might think. First and foremost, this doesn’t necessarily prove anything about global warming as science. It just shows that all of the data that was the chief result of most of the environmental legislation created over the last decade was a farce.
This means that all of those billions of dollars we spent as a global community to combat global warming may have been for nothing.
If news station anchors and politicians were trained as engineers, they would be able to find real proof and not just speculate about the meaning of emails that only made it appear as if something illegal happened.
Meanwhile back at the MSM, crickets chirp.

The careers of those involved should be ended over this gross violation of the scientific method. They have cost us billions of dollars. More importantly, real research and development should have been going on with the money wasted on this phantom. How many medical cures, engineering breakthroughs, and (even) environmental protections could have been developed had the world not wasted its time and money chasing this chimera?

As a software engineer, I can’t believe that the guy that wrote this stuff actually put a comment in the code saying that it was a fudge factor! And now, the “Obligation of the Engineer” oath:

I think this post needs and all the related comments need to be deleted immediately. Any conversation about numbers, graphications, prognostifications, recantations and related whatnot could subject us to criminal violation by way of theft of our intellectual property from Somali Internet Pirates.
Furthermore, all this jibber jabber got started over the act of some organized and coordinated criminal entity that violated what should have been private conversation. After all it was explained to us some time ago that the debate is over. To engage in this conversation is to further a criminal conspiracy and at the very least is fruit from a tainted tree. The Real Revo Rules of Engagement clearly state that there will be no suggestion or promotion of acts of lawlessness, as I have been reminded MANY times.
This is just downright scandalous.
