The Global Warming Trojan Horse
December 20, 2009
As the warm-mongers get more desperate, their predictions of the coming doom become more shrill. At the UK Gardian, Pollyanna Polly Toynbee mourns the opportunity lost at Copenhagen.
Despair is not acceptable, but it may be inevitable. Social democrats are the world’s optimists, knowing human destiny is in our own hands if we have the will to change. Leave pessimism to the world’s conservatives, ever fearful of the future and yearning for a better yesterday. But today optimism feels impossible. The chance of world leaders preventing a more than 2C increase in temperature looks vanishingly small.
You have to wonder about these people. They seem to be, to put it in technical terms, loony toons. Seriously. Let’s imagine for a moment that everything went right for the warmists in Copenhagen. Let’s imagine the delegates agreed to an Al Gore wet dream of emission controls taking effect with lickity speed. Does anyone, anywhere really believe that the global climate wouldn’t do whatever it was going to do anyway? Warmists are delusional. They are really little different from the ancients tossing virgins into pits to appease the weather gods. The only difference is that instead of virgins it is the engine of civilization they are tossing into a pit of authoritaran statism.
There is more to Polly than Pollyannish climate control fantasies. She continues.
Walk around any supermarket noting the vegetables from Africa and South America. Feel the open fridges freeze you in the heat of the warm emporium, and it’s blindingly obvious that all this is not sustainable.
This is a statement of faith and nothing more. There is nothing blinding or obvious about the sustainability or unsustainablity of refrigeration. Electricity isn’t a limited resource and there are many ways to produce it. The entire world could be powered with nuclear energy using current technology. What is blindingly obvious is that Polly feels guilty about consumption and capitalism. Polly’s real goals become blindingly obvious as she continues.
The well-off could buy unused carbon quota from the half of the population that never flies, so money passes from richer to poorer. The price would rise every year, as the quota shrank to limit emissions. Sensible, fair and redistributive, it would be easy to implement with plastic cards for energy and transport bills, compared with wartime rationing of everything all done on paper. But it would require a gigantic collective will to action and a will to redistribute to make it happen. No country as unequal as the UK, let alone the US, can have a collective will when citizens’ interests are diametrically opposed to one another. Inequality between and within nations may be the death of us.
What’s that? Rustling sounds from within the global warming Trojan Horse? Of course, global warm-mongering isn’t really about controlling the climate. That is a fools errand. The failure in Copenhagen wasn’t a failure to control the climate, it was a failure to control the economy. Global warming alarmism has always been a red agenda cloaked in green. Polly is calling for the redistribution of wealth. She wants successful people to pay less successful people to use energy – an by “use energy” we mean “exist in the modern world.” That is the solution to making global weather cooperate with statist political goals: redistributing the wealth.
Polly is bemoaning the failure of socialism in Copenhagen. For the rest of us that is cause for celebration. Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas indeed. And it would be a happy new year if we could drive a stake through the heart of the warm-mongers. Good term, by the way.

…a bit of levity:
Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow…
Oh the weather in Denmark’s frightful,
But the irony’s so delightful,
That everywhere Al Gore goes,
It just snows and it snows and it snows.
When will Al ever see the light?
Will he ever go out in the storm?
Or does his tin hat still fit too tight?
And he still thinks the world’s gettin’ warm..
The conference is slowly dying,
And the moonbats are all good-bying,
Global warming has no place to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
