Killing science to close the “achievement gap”

At Berkeley High School in Berkeley California, they have an achievement gap and that is a problem. White students are doing far better than the state average while black and Latino students are doing worse. This makes them very, very upset. Clearly, they need to close this gap so that all students can show similar performance levels. How to do this? The solution is simple. They will hack off the top.
Berkeley High School is considering a controversial proposal to eliminate science labs and the five science teachers who teach them to free up more resources to help struggling students.
Paul Gibson, an alternate parent representative on the School Governance Council, said that information presented at council meetings suggests that the science labs were largely classes for white students. He said the decision to consider cutting the labs in order to redirect resources to underperforming students was virtually unanimous.
This is the leftist vision for American education: An educational system that produces racially diverse citizens equal in their mediocrity. Berkeley is among the most leftist cities in America and the decision to eliminate science labs because they are “largely classes for white students” perfectly reflects leftist priorities. They value racial diversity and equality of outcome as their primary values. Education, understanding, achievement and merit are disposable in their single minded pursuit of their leftist ideals.

You’d think the left would subsidize condoms and abortions for the underachieving students. That would be their long term solution.
But that would also eliminate their voter base.

Ha! bman, touche’ and nicely said. Not that it would sink into the berkleyites thick skulls. get ready for the Oakland area to descend even further into the pit..I give it 15 years before it resembles detroit.
BTW, this whole thing reminds me of the story of the Bell curve and the twisting of its intentions. I have a brother who teaches in public schools (and yes, he’s a true conservative and one hell of a smart cookie) and we both agree, the bell curve is a damned lie. No subpopulation can be properly sublimated to allow the curve ANY validity. Homogenous populations may exhibit the curve but to attempt to incorporate the entire population renders the entire thesis a fraud. At least as far as the liberals wish to interpret it…
