Well the names have all changed since you hung around…

It is 1979, Jimmy Carter is in the White House doing his best impression of Neville Chamberlain, the Iranians are about to have a Islamic revolution, well you know, ’cause they all wanna change Iran. In the blink of an eye Iran went from ally to enemy. All that is missing is the Shah, but that’s okay, this time around it is Pakistan and the nukes will keep things interesting. Jimmy Carter is back in the White House.

Pakistan is expanding its nuclear weapons program even as Islamic extremists in northwest Pakistan continue to advance in the direction of several highly sensitive nuclear-related sites, U.S. officials and other experts said this week.

Pakistan’s government is completing two new nuclear reactors to produce plutonium for weapons that would be smaller, lighter and more efficient than the 60-odd highly enriched uranium-fueled warheads that Pakistan is now thought to possess, the officials and experts said.

“In the current climate, with Pakistan’s leadership under duress from daily acts of violence by insurgent Taliban forces and organized political opposition, the security of any nuclear material produced in these reactors is in question,” said an April 23 report by the Institute for Science and International Security.

Yeah we tease him a lot cause we’ve got him on the spot, welcome back, welcome back Carter.

While I think Obama has done more to damage US security than any president since Carter, I can’t say that the Pakistani situation is entirely his fault. In some cases, there are no good options, just lesser evils.

However, just because a commander in chief has to choose between the lesser of two evils, it doesn’t mean that he can abdicate that choice altogether.

Roy: I agree. I didn’t mean to blame Pakistan on Obama any more than I would blame 30 years of Iranian unrest on Carter. My point was only that the situation in Pakistan today smells a lot like the situation in Iran in 1979 and that one didn’t turn out well. Barry Carter in the White House doesn’t make me feel like Pakistan is going to turn out much better.

History may not repeat itself, but it definitely rhymes.
