Not to hear the MSM tell it, however.

That’s not really a good thing.
Not only is it not really a good thing–for obvious reasons that only people like Revoistas understand–but it’s an actively BAD thing.
Furthermore, it’s a symptom of a culture that is slowly handing its fate over to “its betters.” And that mentality only ends WHERE, Revoistas? I know I’ve heard the phrase here before…
I agree. I just saw that graph and was surprised.
This appears to be a disturbing trend, but the chart is somewhat misleading. Here’s why I think so:
1) It shows a relative decline beginning roughly when the baby-boomers began to come into adulthood (when being a gun-owner began to be somewhat unfashionable).
2) I think many people don’t care to tell folks if they have guns in their home.
3) Surveys suck as an accurate tool. They are too easily manipulated.
4) There are an estimated 270,000,000 privately-owned firearms in American homes*
5) Beginning around 2008 the number drops off precipitously. We know this to be a previous record-period for gun sales (exceeded only by 2012), yet ownership dropped off? My aching ass…

If I own 10 of those 270,000,000 and most others own say… 1-3, that’s still 90,000,000 households on the high side and 30,000,000 on the low side.
If we assume that an average of 3 people live in each household, we can extrapolate that there are currently 100,000,000 households in the US. That puts the number anywhere from 30-90% (averaged to a mean 60%).
Even with the number of households increasing due to the decline of the family/increase of broken homes, we would find ourselves at a higher rate than these polls show, wouldn’t we?
Depending on who is doing the polling, I may not tell them I have firearms if I were asked.
See what I mean?
NRA: “Do you have guns in your home?”
Me: “Yep.”
ThinkProgress: “Do you have guns in your home?”
Me: “Nope, being overwhelmed with grief at the senseless violence occurring around me, I sold em all.”
