Communism Or Capitalism?

Der Spiegel has a 36 photo essay showing buildings in East Germany before and after the wall came down. It is a very telling comment on the way communism ruins people’s interest in beauty and investment. It also shows us just what a short period of capitalism can do to change all that. Here are images one and two:

Crumbling facades: A courtyard on Markt Strasse in Erfurt, 1991. Photographer Stefan Koppelkamm travelled through East Germany just after the Berlin Wall fell.

He returned to the same places 10 years later. The same courtyard in Erfurt in May 2003. Now with a cafe, the building is hardly recognizable.

Those who voted for Mr. Obama voted for the first image as their preference.

Yep. They voted for the first image, because it’s “FREE”.

PJ O’Roark wrote once about traveling to the USSR.
He noted that everything was grey and dirty. Plus, there wasn’t a plumb line or square angle on any building.

Anyone who knew Gary,Indiana in the 60′s knew the second picture.Today it’s much, much worse than what you see in picture one under Demo rat ic leadership. How is Pittsburg, Detroit ?
Chicago is now a very safe place to take in a Movie or dinner!
