Bang, bang! You’re expelled!

A 6-year-old boy was suspended from his Maryland elementary school for making a gun gesture with his finger, pointing it at a classmate and saying “pow.”

The Washington Post reports the first grader’s parents are fighting to remove the disciplinary action, which the school said was due to the child making a “threat” to shoot another student in December, from the child’s record.

The school says the child pointed his finger at a female student in his class as if it were a gun and said “pow.” The school says the child had been warned before about similar behavior, but chose to do it anyway.

You know, when I was six, we were allowed to play cops and robbers, army and cowboys and Indians at recess. We didn’t, however, play Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat or Left 4 Dead 2. Those were less enlightened times.

Is the inference here, that playing these games causes the meaning of the finger gun to somehow be more sinister?

Nah, I was just laughing at a culture where it is common for people to piss their pants when a boy points his finger and says “pow” but simultaneously believes it normal for kids to engage in simulated beating and murder of prostitutes and sundry massacres on screen.

That’s why I asked. I just had this argument on FB (minutes ago) and was primed, but I know that you don’t support the correlation implies causation argument.

When I was a kid, adults would have smiled and approved of boys playing a wholesome game of cops and robbers with finger guns or cap guns. In the 1960s, my hard core, bar fighting, father would have been shocked by the video games kids play today, however. Its a topsy-turvey world.

Do you think this scene is even remotely possible today? Click to enlarge.

I can’t even imagine the shit storm this would cause today and it was unremarkable and humdrum then.

Well, I would tell the kid to keep his gun out of his mouth but my point is still valid.
