Corporatist Gun Control

You have to smile at the irony. The left usually accuses Republicans of being in bed with big business gun interests. Obama is expected to partner with America’s largest gun retailers to enact gun control legislation.

President Obama plans to ally himself with big business once again by using crony capitalist tactics to pass gun control just as he used them to pass Obamacare. In this case, Obama reportedly plans to make sure that the new gun control law benefits big businesses that sell weapons.

“[T]he White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses,” The Washington Post reports.

“Wal-Mart and other major gun retailers may have an incentive to support closing a loophole that allows people to bypass background checks if they purchase firearms at gun shows or through other types of private sales,” the Post explained, citing a source who works with the Obama administration on gun issues.

You know, I probably wouldn’t balk at a system that required background checks for private sales. It does seem a little absurd to me that, in order to buy a rifle in Bass Pro Shops you must go through the check process but that it is perfectly legal to sell the same gun to a dude in the parking without even asking him his name.

That said, I don’t feel amicable to giving an inch to the gun grabbers. There is no doubt they are engaging in incrementalism and no matter what is agreed to, they will be back and demanding more. They are insatiable and will never stop until the citizenry is disarmed.

Obama’s plan to partner with gun retailers is yet another example as to how mega-businesses are often closer to the government than to their customers. There is an increasingly fine line between the interests of the Leviathan and the largest corporations in America.
