What? A school shooting was thwarted days after Newtown?

Are you frigging kidding me? This happened days after Newtown and the MSM has ignored it? This is journalistic malpractice!

On Monday morning, Thomas Richard Cowan loaded 13 bullets into two handguns, left his German shepherd chained to the fence and drove eight miles from his home in Kingsport to Sullivan Central High School. Whatever his mission, it was the 62-year-old Vietnam veteran’s final drive.

For about an hour, Cowan’s armed invasion spread panic throughout the school before a burst of officers’ gunfire brought him down. No others were injured.

No one knows why Cowan pointed his Honda in the direction of the Blountville, Tenn., high school, where his brother is a janitor. He is described – in court records and interviews – as a peculiar man with a history of erratic, sometimes criminal, behavior and a deep suspicion of the government.

Who held Cowan’s invasion of the school at bay? An armed Carolyn Gudger, the school resource officer.

Cowan trained a .380-caliber semi-automatic pistol at Riden’s face, said Sullivan County Sheriff Wayne Anderson. Carolyn Gudger, the school resource officer, drew her gun, then shielded the principal’s body with her own.

This happened within a week of the Newtown shootings and it was IGNORED by the media. It was a profoundly relevant event that should have been front page, above the fold, top story in the news lede coast to coast. It wasn’t, however. It didn’t advance the gun control agenda. This event proved that an armed woman, in a school, could stop a man with a gun. That information, evidently, was dangerous and it had to be suppressed.

That I am reading this for the first time makes me sick. I wouldn’t have thought it possible, but it further diminishes my already rock bottom opinion of journalism in America.

Update: Rockheim points out that the story may be a couple years old and, for some reason, has a fresh date in the dateline. Frankly, I am relieved. Hat tip Rockheim for the catch.

First I am hearing of this too. Its only a few hours drive away. Shameful.
I live in what I consider to be a small town of 26,000. Our middle school has a Sheriffs deputy assigned to it. My sons high school has four. I’m sure they are not present all the time but you will always see the Sheriffs car parked in front. I see nothing wrong with this practice.

This story is a couple years old it would seem from the post date. It’s merely been updated.. Which seems “odd” to me. Especially since the update seems to minimize and change the ENTIRE presentation of the story.. particularly the turn of events where the guns are involved. Now the school RSO merely talked to him for a couple minutes.. Where in the initial reporting.. a few years ago.. had her drawing on him IMMEDIATELY and holding him in a standoff for several minutes.

It’s still an important story that wouldn’t get any real play nationally as it doesn’t fit the narrative.

Frankly, I am a little relieved to hear that. It would be gross negligence to have ignored it.
