Office established to close Gitmo is closed…

You know what? I am starting to believe that Obama isn’t really interested in keeping his promise to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. In fact, I am starting to believe that the president doesn’t always follow through with his promises.

The State Department on Monday reassigned Daniel Fried, the special envoy for closing the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and will not replace him, according to an internal personnel announcement. Mr. Fried’s office is being closed, and his former responsibilities will be “assumed” by the office of the department’s

The announcement that no senior official in President Obama’s second term will succeed Mr. Fried in working primarily on diplomatic issues pertaining to repatriating or resettling detainees appeared to signal that the administration does not currently see the closing of the prison as a realistic priority, despite repeated statements that it still intends to do so.

I may have once described how I took a class years back that compared Barack Obama to Reinhold Niebuhr (German-American philosopher). The class was taught by a hardcore liberal (Christian liberal, for what it’s worth) that continually fawned over both figures to no end.

Not far into the class, after I realized what Niebuhr was all about, I had an epiphany that I had to share with the class…

[I raise my hand and the prof calls on me]
Me: You know, Sir, I just figured out what’s bugging me.
    Prof: What’s that?
Me: Well you see, this whole time we’ve been evaluating these two figures through the lens that they are both akin to wise, judicious, deliberative philosopher-kings, not unlike King Solomon. But that’s not quite right. We should have been treating them differently.
    Prof: How so?
Me: We should have been treating them as they really are: As the hypocritical, indecisive, duplicitous bastards they really are.
    Prof: [jaw drops]
    Class: [laughs]

This was pretty much an everyday occurrence in that class, believe it or not. Threw off the syllabus a bit, I believe; I don’t think they expected to have such an outspoken conservative in the Obama class.

Now you guys know it is coming…someone somewhere is gonna blame Obama’s failure to close Gitmo on those damn uncompromising republicans. Obama is full of shit. The flies know it. His pals at Salon know. Here Salon dispels that myth that it was the republicans’ fault.
