Iranian Hope and Change

tehran

So where has President Hopenchangetm been for the last three days? Silent.

Some argue that the brave Iranians demonstrating for freedom and democracy would be better off if the American president somehow stayed out of the fight. Really? But Barack Obama is president. His statement wouldn’t be crafted by those dreaded neocons who vulgarly thought all people would like a chance to govern themselves and deserved some modicum of U.S. support in that endeavor. It would be written by subtle liberal internationalists, who would get the pitch and tone just right. And the statement wouldn’t be delivered by the notorious George Bush (who did, however, weigh in usefully in somewhat similar situations in Ukraine and Lebanon). It would be delivered by the popular and credible speaker-to-the-Muslim-world, Barack Obama. Does anyone really think that a strong Obama statement of solidarity with the Iranian people, and a strong rebuke to those who steal elections and shoot demonstrators, wouldn’t help the dissidents in Iran?

Of course it would. So will Obama man up and help give hope and change to millions of oppressed Iranians? Or will he remain quiet hoping the counter-revolutionary flames in Iran get quickly snuffed?

Then again maybe President ACORN is just too damned embarrassed to accuse someone else of voter fraud. That is reasonable.

Do you think he gets embarrassed. I think his self-image would prevent that type of behavior.

Well now we really do have something meaningful in common with the Iranian people. We too may be doomed since Obama accepted the presidency………

Of course Obama isn’t saying anything. Wouldn’t want to offend his best buddy Ahma-whats-his-face by actually supporting a movement for something similar to democracy, now would he?

I keep thinking of how Al Capone was finally put away for something unrelated to his many murders. And hoping like hell the same type of thing might happen with Obama.

For Obama, the US State Department, and our western “allies” to stand by and do nothing while people protest for democracy (or at least the illusion of democracy) is terrible. Yes, it might color the protesters in Iran as pro-Western (and to be sure Mousavi is no prize pig), but these are people demanding that their choice, no matter how limited, be recognized. A previous and better democratic President stood up for people before.

“We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.”

Can you recognize the part of JFK today? I can’t.

If these Persians was hollering for socialism Team 44 would be holding an all day presser and diverting stimulus money their way.

US funding of an Iranian civil war would keep pressure off Iraq.
But when you blow resources on politically motivated spending, there are less options.
