It can’t be said enough: When seconds count, the police and just minutes away.

Put your cellphone to your ear, that usually makes people think twice before they do something.
Really? That’s what you’ve got?
If you are concerned about those few minutes, and you should be, you should do a few things.
First decide whether you want to help yourself or if you are willing to risk being a victim. This is very important. There are many thousands of Americans on both sides of this question. There are many thousands more who are unwilling to face a decision like this. I include them in the ‘Willing to be a victim’ camp.
This is kind of like a flow chart. If you choose victim do nothing. If you decide you want to help yourself get training in self defense. Self defense can be either armed or unarmed. If you choose armed you should try to identify what arm you think will work best for you.
Not all will choose a firearm. That may be because of local laws, personal preference, or worries about children or others in the home.
If you choose to own a firearm you are wise and prudent to get some training. A basic home defense course will introduce you to different kinds of guns. It will also help you to set up a plan just in case, it will teach you some things about the law, and you will get some tips for helping yourself during and after a confrontation.
You will learn to call 911, especially on a cell phone because an intruder may have cut phone lines. Once you are connected with 911 you do not disconnect. If confronted your, and your attackers, actions will be recorded. You will be taught what to say to an intruder and what not to say. And you will learn how to handle the arrival of the police. They will most likely not know who is the bad guy. If you are holding a gun when they arrive you need to put it down and identify yourself. If you don’t put the gun down and inadvertently turn toward the police you will probably be shot.
The training you receive should include range time, giving you an opportunity to become more familiar with guns. Take a second, more advanced course if necessary.
Handguns are not the right home defense choice for everyone. Long guns are easier to hit with and much more effective – especially shotguns.
