Our own John Cox made a simple request, which I was happy to oblige:
Can someone debunk this for me? I just don’t have the energy today. How to prove Obama lowered the deficit in four easy and indisputable steps.
I gave it 5 minutes of my time and answered him. Below is a brief response to the “indisputable” argument. Through accounting gimmicks and increased taxes, Barack Obama has indeed lowered the deficit. The article above is disingenuous and extremely misleading. If the author had any scruples or intellectual integrity, he would offer a fair assessment of the situation. Instead, he is content to pass off half-truths, innuendos, and misdirection in his quest to score cheap political points. Typical liberal.
1) He explains the difference between debt & deficit
2) He uses 2009 budget for the example and says that the budget for 2009 was signed by Bush. He completely neglects telling his readers that the democrat senate has not passed a budget since then.
3) Again 2009 – blames Bush, neglecting the unconstitutional malfeasance of the US (dem run) Senate.
4)fast forwards to 2012 and says “look, the budget deficit is $845B – the lowest since 2006!” Conveniently he leaves out the massive tax increases which are generating more revenue this year, but will drive down investment and further stifle job creation and and ailing economy.
He also conveniently neglects to mention the financial experiment conducted by the US Govt where debts like fanny & freddie & student loans ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE BUDGET!
He also, neglects (intentionally or ignorantly) to inform his r-tards that accounting gimmicks have lowered the interest payments required by law – “** Due to a change in the accounting method for the Department of Defense (DOD) market-based securities, a one time adjustment of $75 billion decreased the Interest Expense on the Public Debt for the month of July.” Source of the gimmick info.
He also neglects to inform his simpletons that the FED is forcing interest rates to remain at or near zero% which greatly reduces the interest on our debt – this is also without considering the sea-castration cuts of $85 Billion dollars, instituted by the Republican party. Convenient.
He’s using all sorts of smoke & mirrors to create the illusion that Barack Obama is not spending like a drunken madman – which simply is not the case. As usual, the .gov didn’t like the numbers, so they changed the metrics until the numbers looked better. I’d love to engage this fool openly, in front of a million viewers.

He also neglects to point out that Obama voted for the 2009 budget in 2008 so he can’t wash his hands of it. Obama “signed” it too.
i think this is why the dems were so willing to go along with this budge for bush. with the wars going on and everything else the deficit spending was outragous at the time. it was probably more money then the dems ever thought about spending. but they passed it and then got the white house and had precedent to spend that much every year after that without ever having to redo it. and they get to blame Bush taboot. of course bush is not innocent, but again, after the first couple of years you cant really blame him for obama’s admin.
